1 fryer chicken 1/3 to 1/2 cup soy sauce 1/2 cup water 1/3 cup brown sugar 1 tablespoon oyster sauce 1/4 cup sherry or rice wine fresh ginger, crushed 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon 5 Spice Powder 1 to 2 pieces star anise 1 clove garlic (optional) crushed red pepper flakes (optional) 1 green onion, chopped sesame seeds
Preparation: Mix all ingredients, except green onion and sesame seeds in a large pot. Heat and add chicken, that has been but into serving pieces. Boil, then simmer 40 minutes on each side, remove, and cool. Cut and serve. I shred the chicken. Sprinkle green onion and sesame seeds on top. May prepare sauce by removing fat from the sauce and discard. Add cornstarch/water mixture to remaining sauce, boiling for 1 minute - pour over chicken.
